Concrete polishers can make the summer last a little longer, and focus on their trade, with a trip to Atlanta for the first International Concrete Polishing and Staining Conference (ICPSC), Sept. 4-7.

It takes place at the Westin Atlanta Perimeter North, less than a 30-minute drive from downtown Atlanta. Concrete Surfaces is the official publication of this new annual event—the only forum of its kind dedicated specifically to the concrete polishing industry.

ICPSC brings together concrete polishing and staining equipment, products, and education all under one roof. Contractors, architects, and engineers will have the chance to immerse themselves in this expanding segment of the concrete industry during three full days of networking opportunities and educational seminars.

The conference is not affiliated with any specific manufacturer or supplier. An independent group of concrete polishing contractors with more than 50 years of combined business, construction, and polishing experience established the event.

After realizing there was no event targeted for contractors such as themselves, Charles Griffasi and the other conference organizers joined together with the goal to create a venue at which industry professionals could learn techniques, procedures, and the latest industry technology, and discuss new issues and ideas.

Network and learn

Griffasi, exhibitor registrations coordinator and a concrete contractor for 30 years, explains their concept: “Invite experts to present the science and engineering of everything from the machinery, chemistry, abrasives, and electrical requirements to implementation and maintenance. Have the vendors on hand to show what is available to meet the attendees' needs. Put it in a beautiful venue in a thriving city. And have everyone network, learn, and begin to standardize what could be a huge, in-demand, green, visually beautiful product.”

The Westin Atlanta Perimeter North will be the hub of activity for concrete polishers, Sept. 4-7.

A key part of the experience will be the seminars, where the industry's leading minds will cover topics such as the basics of chemistry (densifiers, hardeners, stains, dyes), equipment (polishers, grinders, edgers, vacuums), abrasives (metal, resin, specialty pads), repairs (holes, cracks, spalling), decorative techniques, coating removal, and the “big picture,” which includes everything from estimating to getting paid and potential pitfalls along the way.

On the last day of the conference, an Ask the Experts roundtable discussion will feature a panel of industry experts who will answer a variety of questions from the audience.

The fee for registration is $355 before Aug. 1; $395 before Aug. 21; $425 after Aug. 21, or for onsite registration. There also is a discounted rate for groups of three or more.

A limited number of discounted hotel rooms are available at the Westin Atlanta Perimeter North for attendees until Aug. 8. The hotel is a short drive from downtown Atlanta and its major attractions, including the new Georgia Aquarium (the world's largest), and Atlantic Station, Atlanta's new retail and entertainment district. Situated on a private lake, guests will be sure to enjoy this tranquil retreat from the city.
