ASTM International Committee C01 on Cement has named Paul D. Tennis, Ph.D., manager of cement and concrete technology at the Portland Cement Association in Skokie, Ill., as its new chairman. Committee C01 includes more than 500 members who oversee 56 ASTM International standards for hydraulic cements, including portland, natural, pozzolanic, masonry and slag cements.

Tennis joined ASTM International in 1996. He works on several subcommittees within Committees C01 and C09 on Concrete and Concrete Aggregates, and he is also a member of Committee E60 on Sustainability. Committee C01 honored him with the Bryant Mather Award in 2009 for his support in the advancement of ASTM C150, Specification for Portland Cement. He also served a term on the ASTM Committee on Standards, for which he received a Service Award.

Tennis has spent much of his career with the Portland Cement Association, starting as a materials research engineer and rising to his current position of manager of cement and concrete technology, which he assumed in 2009. His professional interests are focused on improving the performance and durability of concrete though research on concrete materials and concrete deterioration mechanisms. He has authored or served as technical editor on more than 50 research reports on these topics.

In addition to ASTM International, Tennis is a member of the American Concrete Institute. A graduate of Clemson University, Clemson, S.C., where he earned a B.S. in ceramic engineering, Tennis received an M.S. in materials science and engineering and a Ph.D. in civil and environmental engineering from Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill.
