Lavalle Stadium at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, N.Y., won the award as the Best Stadium in the 2006 Design Awards competition sponsored by the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute. The multiuse facility can accommodate 7500 spectators, expand to 15,000 seats, and was designed to minimize its visual impact on the campus grounds. To accomplish this, precast concrete upper-seating sections were supported by massive architectural cast-in-place concrete buttresses with an acid-etched finish and connected with an elevated press box, VIP level, and observation roof.
