Twelve finalists were honored by CEMEX, Inc. for outstanding achievement in construction and design in the inaugural CEMEX Building Awards ceremony in May.

Three projects were selected as best in the nation, and their designers, contractors, and engineers were awarded the U.S. title in either the institutional/industrial, infrastructure, or housing project category.

“The projects these finalists have completed across America represent just how far we've come in our industry. They raise the bar on design, construction, innovation, and environmental sustainability,” said Gilberto Perez, President of CEMEX, Inc.

The award recipients are:

Institutional/Industrial Award: The CalPERS Headquarters Building, Sacramento, Calif. Architect: Kendall/Heaton Associates. Contractors: Hensel Phelps Construction Co. and Amaroso Construction Co.

Infrastructure Award: Santana Row, San Jose, Calif. Architect: Sandy & Babcock. Concrete contractor: RJS & Associates. General contractor: Bovis Lend Lease.

Housing Award: Fremont Mews Apartments, Sacramento, Calif. Concrete contractor: RJS & Associates. General contractor: JR Roberts Corporation.

The award recipients were recognized for use and application of concrete, innovation, execution of the project, architectural or structural design, urban concept, and the attention and respect for the environment the builder, architect, or engineer displayed. The recipients will later compete against winners from approximately 30 countries for the world title at the fifteenth CEMEX International Awards held in Monterrey, Mexico in November 2006.

Award recipients received a specially designed concrete and glass award. Rick Yelton, editor-in-chief of The Concrete Producer and Masonry Construction magazines helped present the awards.
