Footing-to-wall connections are a requirement of the International Residential Code (IRC), which requires this connection to be performed with steel pins or a concrete notch. In both cases, lateral soil wall loads are transferred to the underlying bearing soil via the footing friction at the bearing interface. The IRC requires either: #4 steel rebar placed 24 inches o.c. along the length of the footing, extending 6 inches into the foundation wall and 6 inches into the footing; or a 1 1/2 x 1 1/2-inch notch placed in the footing top to act as a keyway for shear transfer.
