Timothy McCarthy started a lumber business in Ann Arbor, Mich., almost 150 years ago. Since then, McCarthy Holdings has grown into one of the largest construction firms in the world, with 13 offices around the country employing almost 3000 workers. Even with all that’s changed, McCarthy still stresses its hands-on approach to construction: It is 100% employee-owned, and it makes a point to be involved in every aspect of a project, from preconstruction to risk management. It also takes pride in its diverse experience: It has worked on everything from research laboratories (the J. Craig Venter Institute in San Diego) to art hubs (the Dallas City Performance Hall). McCarthy says it is all tied together through the ongoing mission to apply “out-of-the-box thinking and technology tools to push the envelope.”
