Q.: Is there a publication that explains standard aggregate tests in an easily understood manner? The ASTM standards for specific gravity, abrasion resistance, sieve analysis, and similar tests are hard reading.

A.: An American Concrete Institute publication, Aggregates for Concrete (El-78), should help you to better understand the ASTM test methods. The 60-page booklet costs $17.50 ($11.25 for ACI members). Order it from American Concrete Institute, P.O. Box 19150, Detroit, MI 48219.

More information about aggregate tests

In the June 1991 Problem Clinic, a reader asked if there was a publication that explained standard aggregate tests in an easily understood manner. We recommended Aggregates for Concrete, published by the American Concrete Institute. Bryant Mather of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Waterways Experiment Station mentioned another helpful book that's published by ASTM. It's STP 169B, Significance of Tests and Properties of Concrete and Concrete-making Materials. This 882-page book costs $65.00 and can be ordered from ASTM, 1916 Race St., Philadelphia, PA 19103.
