Dr. Jessica Kriegel, author of Unfairly Labeled: How Your Workplace Can Benefit From Ditching Generational Stereotypes, recently sat down with Inc.com to explain the benefits millennials can bring to your company. Kriegel has campaigned to end the generational stereotypes that exist in the workplace and inform people of the lack of evidence behind current stereotypes.
One surprising fact from her research was that the turnover rate of people age 25-34 in the 1980s (Generation-X) is the same as the current turnover rate of millennials, three years. She acknowledges the negative consequences associated with generational stereotypes and gives tips to leaders on how to deal with these issues:
Check your bias: When working with millennials, refrain making broad assumptions. If you already believe millennials to be a certain way (e.g., entitled, lazy, requiring praise, or benefits hungry) you will interpret their actions differently than if you approach them with an open mind.
