Bill Avery founded Concrete Construction magazine in September 1956—that makes September our 60th anniversary issue. That’s more than 700 issues of the magazine in print! In 2006 we went all out for the 50th anniversary and we’re not going that far this year but still want to recognize the milestone.
I met Bill Avery several times and he was an inspiring and enthusiastic man. His stated objective for CC was that it promotes “a free exchange of ideas, opinions, and experiences.” After he retired, Dan Anderson, his son-in-law, took the reins and led the company well for 13 years prior to its sales to Hanley Wood in 1998—almost exactly as I came to work there, first on Masonry Construction and then on Concrete Construction. There have only been eight editors of CC in these 60 years.
In the September issue, we will bring you a review of some of the magazine’s highlights, but if you have a favorite article or a story about the magazine, please let me know.
