Cheaper than traditional clay-fired bricks, concrete blocks have become ever present in the construction world. Yet, while cheaper to make, concrete production accounts for roughly 5% of all man-made carbon dioxide emissions, where concrete blocks make up a significant portion of that 5%. Watershed Materials, a California-based company, hopes to curtail the emissions emitted by concrete by developing alternatives to concrete block. They hope the new product that will provide an alternative to using cement.
Aside from the environmental benefits, the Watershed Materials’ system uses a system that provide wider range to aggregate sizes than traditional concrete. Furthermore, through funding from the National Science Foundation, Watershed Materials is working on technology that will reduce cement use in their concrete blocks, to just zero.
