Profiles the winners of the 1996 National Concrete Canoe Competition, organized by Master Builders Inc. and the American Society of Civil Engineers. This year, 30 teams of civil-engineering students from universities across the country competed for $9,000 worth of scholarships by designing, building, and racing concrete canoes. The University of Alabama - Huntsville won its third title in four years. Michigan State University came in second and University of California - Berkeley third. NINTH COMPETITION Held June 13-15 on the campus of the University of Wisconsin - Madison, this marks the ninth national concrete canoe competition. To land first, second, or third place, teams need to be in top physical and mental condition. Teams are judged on various criteria, including design papers, oral presentations, canoe appearance, and racing performance.
