When Thomas Dugan a general contractor in coastal North Carolina who specializes in building hurricane-resistant homes, was challenged with finding an alternative to treated wood porches that can withstand a harsh coastal environment he turned to concrete. The result was a system called Versa-Dek.

According to Dugan, who wrote about his deck projects for Professional Deck Builder magazine (a sister publication to Concrete Construction):

[Versa-Dek] is a steel pan system with a dovetail design that allows for clear spans of up to 20 feet or more. The pans are used to support a thin slab of poured-in-place concrete, allowing us to build decks that are inherently waterproof below, essentially maintenance free, readily adaptable to a variety of finish materials, immune to fire, and resistant to wind forces beyond a Category 3 hurricane
