Want to protect yourself from wildfires? Just build a concrete dome and you’re set. That’s exactly what John Belles did in 1999 when he built his thin shell, concrete dome in Okanogan County in Washington state.
As wildfires continue to cause damage in Washington state, Belles got a call when he was working 30 miles away from town. A friend called to warn him of fire approaching and that he needed to take shelter.
As the fire passed over his dome, Belles said he saw the flames outside of the window. No damage was done to the three-layer concretedome made up of a PVC skin, styrofoam insulation, and a reinforced concrete shell.
