To ensure that conditions are safe, companies should carefully evaluate their employees to find those capable and responsible enough to be an OSHA competent person. Here is a list of the competent person's responsibilities as it appears in OSHA's "Construction Standards for Excavations": * Design structural ramps * Monitor water removal equipment and operations * Inspect excavations, adjacent areas, and protective systems daily: prior to the start of work, as needed throughout the shift, and after every rainstorm or other hazard-increasing occurrence * Remove employees from a hazard until the necessary precautions are taken * Examine materials and equipment for wear and damage; if unusable, remove from service * Classify the soil and, if necessary, reclassify the soil after changed conditions * Reduce soil slope below maximum allowable slope when surcharge loads are present
