The Mason Contractors Association of America (MCAA) sponsored the 17th annual Masonry Skills Challenge at World of Concrete/World of Masonry 2016 in Las Vegas. The competition showcases first, second, and third-year apprentices who won at the regional, U.S., and foreign competition levels.

Contestants had three hours to construct a final project based on the provided materials and were presented with a drawing appropriate to their skill level only moments before the competition. Tim O'Toole, MCAA director of marketing, education, and information technology, commented on the quality of these projects:

The final projects looked great; the apprentices should be very proud of their three hours of hard work. The judges were impressed with the quality of the apprentices’ construction, and had the tough decision of choosing the winners.

Here are the winners:

First Year: Chaz Tomberlin, McGee Brothers Company, Monroe, N.C.

Second Year: Heath Maclean, WASCO, Inc., Nashville, Tenn.

Third Year: Lane Mullis, McGee Brothers Company, Monroe, N.C.
