New standard ASTM C1712 helps concrete producers develop and provide control when measuring and maintaining the stability of self-consolidating concrete (SCC) mixtures. Created by subcommittee C09.47 on Self-Consolidating Concrete, the test method is for Rapid Assessment of Static Segregation Resistance of Self-Consolidating Concrete Using Penetration Test. This versatile and quick test can be used in a laboratory or in the field. Results come within minutes of SCC production or placement, which allows adjustments to be made for preferred segregation.
Because ASTM C1712 is a new standard, the subcommittee is waiting for feedback and suggestions.
Next on the subcommittee's agenda is developing a new standard for casting SCC specimens without using mechanical assistance or vibration consolidation. For more information on ASTM standards, visit www.astm.org.
