Concrete can quite literally be viewed as the building block of the modern world. Despite the prominence of concrete in modern society, it can often be overlooked.
It is used in the very freeways on which we travel, the very skyscrapers in which many of us live or work, and the stadiums many of attend to cheer on our favorite teams. However, Courland also mentions that the flaws and weaknesses of concrete are also overlooked:
In particular, reinforced concrete has proved to be much more fragile, and much more shortlived than was originally thought. "[It] has a limited lifespan. And the reason for that is that steel reinforcement will eventually corrode. And that's why our infrastrucure is failing right now.
