A team in the United Kingdom is testing out self-healing concrete. Researchers at Cardiff University are taking over a site in the South Wales Valleys to test this new technology out.
Entitled Materials for Life (M4L), the project is testing out three separate concrete-healing technologies. The goal is to develop a system that is embedded into the concrete that, when it initially sets, will automatically sense when damage has occurred. Then, once it senses damage, the system will be able to repair itself without needing human assistance.
These self-healing materials and intelligent structures will significantly enhance durability, improve safety and reduce the extremely high maintenance costs that are spent each year. This major trial, the first of its kind in the UK, will provide us with important insights to help transfer the technologies from the lab into real-world settings.
