Yes, you read that correctly: WOC. As in the World of Concrete trade show and educational bonanza at the Las Vegas Convention Center next month. For at least 43 years, it’s been THE go-to event for anyone and everyone in our industry.

Contractors who polish, coat, grind, treat, stamp, stain, repair, and rehabilitate concrete can learn how to do these things at the show’s hands-on training, technical workshops, Gold Lot demos, and from the exhibitors in the Concrete Surfaces and Decorative Pavilion.

Unless you’re just starting out, that’s bread-and-butter stuff. You make things pretty, of course, and that’s much harder than it looks, although the winners of our 2015 Polished Concrete awards make it look easy.

But you also bring expertise to the job that no one else can. The industry is slowly but surely acknowledging that your input is crucial to giving owners the result they envision.

Since happy owners mean higher profits for all, that makes you a vital team member — not an afterthought.

You see this recognition in the industry’s first repair-only building code. This was the lead feature in our last issue. The American Concrete Institute wants you to use ACI 562-13 to insert yourself into rehabilitation design instead of having to work with the slab you’re given.

Proactive teamwork is also the subject of the Polishing Luncheon & Forum on Feb. 2. At “A Game of Whisper: Specifying a Polished Concrete Floor,” an architect, general contractor, slab contractor, ready-mix supplier, and polisher discuss how to collaborate on developing specifications that produce a slab that enables you to give owners what they want.

The World of Concrete also provides a bevy of business-ownership and -development sessions that any contractor, regardless of specialty, would benefit from. These include the daily Breakfast with the Experts on topics including On-Site Troubleshooting: Surfaces and Selecting Repair Materials.

Come and ask your questions — and get good answers.

See you in Vegas!
