What is the Los Angeles abrasion test?
This test is described in ASTM C 131 for aggregate of 1 1/2-inch maximum or less and in ASTM C 535 for aggregates of 3- to 1 1/2-inch, 2- to 1-inch or 1 1/2- to 3/4-inch size. It involves tumbling the aggregate and standard steel balls in a testing drum for a standard number of revolutions and measuring the amount of material that is reduced to less than 12-mesh size. The test is useful in predicting the performance of aggregates in aggregate subbases or concrete.
