A 6- by 8-foot machine pedestal of concrete 4 feet high must be removed from a machine room without creating any vibration, dust or smoke and without any more noise than necessary. What would be a good method?
One method would be wet-sawing the concrete with diamond blades into pieces small enough to handle easily. Another method would be to use a concrete splitter, which is a hydraulically powered tool, after a hole has been drilled in the concrete for its insertion. The blade of this tool expands to create a crack. By successive drilling and cracking the operator can break the concrete into pieces of various shapes and sizes for easy removal. The method is described more fully in the article "New Concrete Demolition Technique,"
