Pride in workmanship from dedicated, knowledgeable people are the keys to achieving outstanding results in concrete paving, according to this year's winners and runners-up in the fifth annual National Awards Program for Excellence in Concrete Pavement. Sponsored by the American Concrete Pavement Association and Concrete Construction magazine, the program attracted 80 nominated projects, the largest pool of nominated projects in the program's history. The 1994 awards recognize contractors, owners, and engineers who produced outstanding quality in seven different categories (municipal streets and urban arterials, concrete pavement restoration, divided highways, state roads, county roads, general aviation airports, and commercial and military airports) for projects completed in 1993. A panel of 10 industry representatives judged the nominated projects in four categories: * Overall pavement smoothness * Quality control, including concrete strength and thickness * Project complexity, including work-zone traffic, and other challenges to the paving operation * Innovations
