Denver artist Carolyn Braaksma has been making a name for herself with a variety of artworks in concrete, both precast and cast-in-place. Braaksma specializes in combining concrete and metal shapes and often is involved in producing the forms or form liners for the artworks she has designed. Most of her recent work is on display in public areas throughout Colorado. Braaksma's To Market, To Market, which earned an Award of Excellence from the Rocky Mountain Chapter of the American Concrete Institute, establishes site identity at the entrance to Denver's Broadway Marketplace. The precast panels feature silhouettes that combine images of a house that once stood on the site with some of the products sold in the new market. Another of Braaksma's award-winning works is the Broadway Underpass at the University of Colorado, Boulder. Braaksma created elastomeric form liners with designs based on a topographic map of Boulder to cast two walls 8 feet high and 60 feet long. Broadway Underpass has received awards from the American Institute of Architects, Historic Boulder Inc., and the Rocky Mountain Chapter of ACI.
