I find it endlessly impressive that a group of very smart and highly paid people will sit in a stuffy room on a Sunday afternoon and argue about each individual word in an ACI or ASCC committee document. For example, is maximum water content the same thing as the specified water-cement ratio? Is workability the same as slump? Is water ever effective for retempering concrete? These may seem small matters to some but the guides and codes that come out of these discussions do matter because the rest of the industry takes what a committee like ACI 305, Hot Weather Concreting, says as gospel—and frankly it is: concrete gospel, because the rest of us study it word for word for deeper meaning and truth. What documents do you think are essential for understanding concrete and its uses?
