Two new concepts in design of precast bridge deck slabs provide a smooth riding surface at transverse joints without application of concrete overlay. These concepts were applied when precast slabs were used to redeck the Milford-Montague Toll Bridge, which connects Pennsylvania and New Jersey over the Delaware River. The innovative concepts were: a slab-to-stringer connection that permitted precise vertical adjustment of the transverse edge of slab to the edge of the previously installed adjacent slab; and a coupling for prestressing bar tendons that, with keying, produced a very tight joint.
