The owner of an organic grocery store in Southern California wanted a long-lasting, low-cost, polished concrete floor.

Javier Lopez and crew of X-cel Concrete Creations recently accepted the mission to bring back the luster of a 15,000-square-foot concrete floor at an organic grocery store in Southern California.

The floor had been acid-stained and sealed, but the coating was peeling and scratched. Like many other stores looking to cut costs, the owner opted for the long-lasting, low-cost, “organic” polished concrete floor.

Emphasizing the need to always perform a preliminary sample, Lopez says the sample saves them time and money by being prepared for how the concrete will react to the polishing process.

On this job, he found the edges were going to cause trouble. Edges are known for being uneven and difficult to reach. Many contractors often resort to applying borders of stain or other coatings because they don't want to spend the time grinding the edges by hand. But Lopez turned to an edging machine instead.

“We use the SP13 edger from Eagle Solutions because of the weight of the machine,” Lopez says. “It is the only edge machine on the market with a head weight of up to 265 pounds. Instead of hand-grinding for days, we were able to make our first cut using 30-grit diamonds and followed up high areas and hard-to-reach corners with a hand grinder. This drastically cut down on labor.”

While the center of the floor received coating removal diamonds for the first cut with the machine, Lopez was able to easily feather the edges with the center, creating a beautiful organic concrete floor with-in four days.

X-cel Concrete Creations specializes in medium-sized retail, school, and restaurant facilities and custom garage floors utilizing dyes, stencils, and decorative cuts. Javier credits his success to understanding his customers' time frames.

“Specialty stores need you to stick to their schedule,” he explains. “They have a lot of people coming in and out and they can't be closed for long periods. Having the right equipment for the job and experienced applicators make all the difference in the world.”
