Part 1 of this article, which appeared in the January 1996 issue, explained the mechanics of using the F-number system to manage the quality of floor slab installations. Presented here are sample specification excerpts that show contractors and specifiers how F-number requirements are typically addressed in project specifications for random-traffic floors.

The use of specified overall value (SOV) and minimum local value (MLV) allows the specifier to tailor contract documents to the specific needs of the owner. At the same time, these specification requirements inform the contractor of the criteria that will be used to gauge the acceptability of the work.
