How soon should I expect deterioration of a new concrete slab that has a crazed surface?
Crazed concrete is unsightly but crazing does not ordinarily indicate the beginning of deterioration. The cracks are usually dormant although extreme exposure conditions could result in their progressive enlargement. Most crazing is superficial and the depth of cracking is probably less than 1/16 inch. Moisture or moisture laden with salt will usually penetrate this deep even without cracks. If the crazing is severe it would probably be advisable to apply a protective coating such as linseed oil as insurance against the penetration of moisture and deicing salts.
