Q.: Can a curing compound that meets the ASTM C 309 specification be used with a calcium aluminate cement This type of cement is not listed in the Bureau of Reclamation's Concrete Manual, Eighth Edition.

A.: As long as the curing compound is satisfactory for portland cement concrete there is no reason to believe that it would be unsatisfactory for curing concrete made with calcium aluminate cement. However, it is important to note that proper use of curing compounds cannot be overemphasized when used on this type of concrete. Hydration of calcium aluminate cement takes place almost entirely in the first 24 hours. The concrete must be protected from loss of water during this period.
