Q.: A recent issue contained some comments regarding disadvantages of wood foundations. Would you send us your views on the subject because we wish to build an underground house soon.

A.: The disadvantages of wood foundations seem to be so many that we can hardly list them here. Basically, wood foundations require so much unusual attention to many details that the chances are not too good that they will be built properly. Add to this that if water finally finds its way into the wood it will delaminate the plywood, leach out the arsenic preservative and leave the wood subject to rot. With many tons of earth on top of the roof, the structure would hardly remain safe.
