Is there any way to get a discount on the steel when the union requires bending on the job rather than in the shop? We recently had to spend additional money to have the steel bent at the site.
Usually the steel supplier includes shop drawings, schedules, bending and delivery in his bid. Shop bending is not permitted, however, in places where union contracts require that steel be bent on the job. In such places the steel bid is likely to include everything except bending, and the supplier will cut bars to length, tag them and deliver them as straight pieces. His bid should be carefully checked to see whether he has charged for bending.
