Q.: Some block partition walls are to be left unplastered but painted. When I laid out some elevations showing wall openings for doors I found that a lot of blocks will have to be cut to odd sizes. Not only does this require a lot of sawing, but it makes the wall look a little bit cluttered and ragged. Do you have any suggestions?

A.: The standard recommendation is to design all openings in multiples of 8 inches. If your partitions have not been designed that way, perhaps your designer would be willing to adjust the sizes of the openings. The diagram, from page 96 of Concrete Masonry Handbook, by Frank A.
