In Bonn, Germany, famous for its many beautiful buildings and traditional statues, there is a startling new Beethoven memorial. It is a massive reinforced concrete portrait of Beethoven's face standing 17 feet high, and almost as wide and deep, weighing 25 tons. Created by a 52-year-old Dusseldorf professor of art and photography, Klaus Kammerichs, the unusual sculpture unveiled in November 1986 is rapidly becoming a favorite subject for tourist photographers. Intricate features of this concrete sculpture were achieved by carving layers of expanded polystyrene with a hot wire and gluing them together to form the mold. After placing reinforcing steel in the mold, the sculptor cast all of the concrete in one pour.
