Is there a rule of thumb that can be used for estimating the amount of cement or concrete that will be required in the building of a stated number of houses?
There have been a good many of them over the years. The best study we are familiar with was made in 1956, when the average cement utilization of all houses built was 55 barrels. With the steady trend toward larger floor areas, larger lots and wider driveways it seems almost a certainty that the comparable figure now would be over 60 barrels per house. Assuming an average of 1.33 barrels of cement in a cubic yard of concrete, this would indicate an average consumption per house of around 45 cubic yards.
