High strength reinforcing bars, with yield points up to 75,000 psi for columns and 60,000 psi for other building components, are available in the United States and are now being used on many American projects. Higher yield bars provide a higher design stress. Used under the ACI building Code, high strength bars can result in considerable savings in steel and concrete in columns, foundations, continuously reinforced highway paving, missile sites and dams. Further advantages noted are an increase in floor space, lowered overall building heights, a reduction in dead load, and greater flexibility and attractiveness of design.
