Q.: Is there a standard way of measuring the depth of frost that still exists in the ground? We would like to know how soon we can start work again after the winter freeze.

A.: We suggest using a coring machine to drill out a core of earth several feet deep. The unfrozen soil in the core should fall away easily leaving only the frozen part. In this way the exact point below the ground where the frost starts, as well as the depth of the frozen layer, can be easily ascertained.
