What are the practical results of using steel fiber reinforced concrete overlays on highway pavements? How much can we expect to reduce the number of transverse cracks?
It would be hard to predict the exact amount but the findings from the Greene County, Iowa, test road might be cited. It has been reported that only about 1/5 as many cracks developed in steel fibrous overlays as in conventional overlays. However, the results were even better than this in those fibrous overlay toppings that were unbonded. In five unbonded sections of fibrous overlay toppings, each about 100 feet long, there was a total of 3 tranverse cracks.
