Despite tough obstacles, a construction team achieved remarkable F-numbers during the placement of a 26,000-square-foot concrete floor for a Texas arena. Challenges included:

  • Stringent flatness and levelness tolerances (specified overall value of FF45/FF35).
  • Expansive subgrade soil, which required the use of corrugated void forms beneath the slab.
  • Installation of 80 anchor inserts during floor construction.
  • Placing the floor without the use of edge forms at the perimeter. (The arena's perimeter walls were already in place before floor construction began.)

Article describes the contractor's solutions to each of these problems as well as the concrete placing and finishing procedures used. Overall F-numbers for the completed floor were FF101/FF50.
