What is a good way to produce a nonslip surface on a stairway?
If architectural appearance doesn't matter, a nonslip surface can be obtained by brooming, wire-combing, wood-floating, swirl-troweling or sack-rubbing to a gritty surface. Another way is to trowel silicon carbide or aluminum oxide grit into the tread during finishing. Block or strip inserts of these materials can also be set in the surface to a predetermined pattern. Still another means of avoiding slip is to use special nosings and cut grooves parallel to them in the surface.
