In using shrinkage-compensating concrete we seem to be having a new problem with plastic shrink age cracking. Could the cement have anything to do with it?
The cement may have something to do with it. Concrete made with shrinkage-compensating semen bleeds less than concrete made with portland semen and this lack of bleed water could aggravate any tendency toward plastic shrinkage cracking. Precaution that can be taken against plastic shrinkage cracking are: erection of sunshades and windbreaks, protesting the concrete with wet coverings whenever finishing operations are not being done, fog spraying, dampening the subgrade before concreting, dampening the aggregates before use if they are absorptive, and cooling the materials used in the concrete mix.
