Is there a foolproof method of preventing the drafts in a house caused by air leaking between the plate and the concrete slab?
Horse and Home magazine recently reported that one builder has solved this problem by adding 2 inches to the customary 6-inch base to raise the slab, and then using an extra 2- by 4-inch plate nailed to the one which is bolted to the foundation wall (see cut). With this arrangement, cold air that seeps under the plate is dead-ended against the edge insulation and the slab. The need for caulking is also eliminated.
