Q.: In patching work on bridge decks what should be done about rebars that are cut, bent, damaged by the work in progress, or corroded?

A.: First of all, work around rebars should be done with care to avoid unnecessary damage from hammers, chisels or other tools. If any damage is done to a rebar, or if it has been corroded enough to reduce the cross-sectional area, a length of new rebar should be inserted parallel to it. Any exposed rebars that are higher than the level of surrounding bars should be bent back down so that they will receive an adequate amount of concrete cover when patching is done.
