Popouts from alkali-silica reaction are common in our area, but worse on some jobs than others. Besides using low-alkali cement what can we do to minimize the problem?
There are several helpful measures. Use a lean concrete mix if possible. Use an aggregate that contains less than the usual amount of material passing the 3/8-inch but retained on the Number 8 sieve. Use polyethylene film or other watertight membrane between the slab and the subgrade. If the surface is to be sealed do not apply the sealer until the concrete has cured and then dried.
