A 10-foot by 60-foot wall that was formerly an exterior basement wall is now the interior wall in an addition and it is desirable to paint it. The trouble is that it has an asphalt coating. How can we get the asphalt off?
Scraping wouldn't get it all. Grinding or scarifying seems like excessive work. Solvents would carry some of the asphalt deeper into the wall. A good solution might be to strip it by flame cleaning. You might improvise equipment for the purpose or you might use a blowpipe designed for such flame cleaning that is available from Burdox Inc., Subsidiary of AGA Aktiebolag, 3300 Lakeside, Avenue, Cleveland, Ohio 44114.
