The Hofmann tower in suburban Lyons, Ill., was built in 1908 by George Hofmann, Jr. The tower was sold in 1983 to the Illinois Department of Conservation, which is taking steps to preserve and reconstruct parts of it. Overall, the structure was found sound, but major repairs and cleanup are required. The walls are in good condition except for some deterioration at the parapets. The walls have vertical control joints; few shrinkage or temperature cracks have been found. The original concrete roof slab was completely exposed to the weather for about 75 years; no roof membrane had been provided. Concrete has spalled and delaminated; supporting steel beams are severely corroded and the roof is sagging badly. The entire roof is now being removed and rebuilt.
