The many techniques for fighting corrosion of reinforcing steel increase cost and may require changes in construction methods. In the long run, though, they add to the life of a structure. Most corrosion problems are related to chlorides. Concrete can be protected from chlorides in three ways:
  • Sealing the surface to prevent the ingress of chlorides
  • Modifying the concrete to reduce its permeability
  • Protecting the reinforcing bars
