In using shrinkage-compensating cement is it always necessary to provide restraint? If so, is it possible to keep the concrete from expanding beyond a certain amount?
Yes, it is always necessary to provide restraint. Expansion is normally 0.03 to 0.10 percent. If it were not restrained it would expand four or five times as much. It is not possible to prevent expansion entirely; the concrete will continue to expand until essentially all the potential material has been used up.
