Almost every time one of the utilities companies in our area cuts out some pavement to work on their lines the replaced pavement seems to break or settle. How can settlement be prevented when the soil has no time to compact before repaving?
The hole or ditch must be backfilled in a way that causes it to respond to loads and climate in the same way as the material around it. The order of replacement of the excavated material must be the reverse of that in which it was removed. Moisture must be matched to that of the surroundings and compaction carried out in shallow lifts. If the job is done right all the material that came out will go back in.
