Do waterproof coatings improve the durability of concrete?
Limited tests indicate that certain waterproof coatings may improve both the durability and abrasion resistance of concrete. The July 1957 issue of the Journal of the American Concrete Institute gives the results of some tests with a continuous film of neoprene latex rubber about 1/16 inch thick. The author concluded that no loss in dynamic modulus of elasticity occurs as a result of freezing and thawing so long as the latex coating remained unbroken. The thickness of the coating was found to have no significance in the freeze-thaw tests.
