Q.: When I put in a home garage floor, using expansion joint fillers along the walls and wire mesh in the slab, should I cut control joints in both directions across the middle of the floor?
A.: If the welded wire fabric is properly located 2 inches down from the top and the proper amount of fabric is used there should be no need for making cuts across the floor. This is because the welded wire fabric should prevent the formation of any cracks except minute ones and it should hold these cracks tightly closed. Nevertheless, if you have any doubts about the effectiveness of the fabric because of improper fabric placement it would do no harm to put in saw cuts across the floor. In this case do not run the fabric across the joints. If you do not use fabric at all, then these control joints are certainly advisable.
